The commonwealth Games is a sporting contest bringing all the members of the Great British Empire together. The multinational, multi-sport event- The Commonwealth Games is held every four years and engages the best athletes of the Commonwealth Nations of the Great Britain. Around 5000 athletes take part in the series of games. The Commonwealth Games is organized and controlled by Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

What is in Name

Firstly, the event was held in 1930 with the name of British Empire Games. In 1954, the name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth Games and again changed to British Commonwealth Games. in 1970. Since 1978, it is known as The Commonwealth Games.

A number of games series are participated between the members of Commonwealth of Nations. Currently there are 54 members of the Commonwealth Nations of Britain and 71 teams contribute in the Games.

The Commonwealth Games 2010

The nineteenth Commonwealth Games is to be held in New Delhi, India in the year 2010. The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be largest multi-sport event India has ever hosted. The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be ninth which will held under the name Commonwealth Games. India won the bid in 2003 and started to prepare for it. The game events will be held between 3 October and 14 October 2010. The opening ceremony of the event is scheduled to take place in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.

There are 17 sports events planned for Commonwealth Games 2010- Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.
