Agra Fort- UNESCO World Heritage

Agra Fort, Agra is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. Mughal Emperors Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb nade the city of Agra as the capital of India and rules from the Agra Fort. The prime of Agra appeared with the supremacy of Humayun's son, Akbar The Great (Jalauddin Muhammad Akbar). In the period of his reign, the major portion of the Agra fort was constructed. Construction of the Agra fort commenced in 1156. The Agra Fort Agra reached to its completion in 1605. Shah Jahan, also Shahjahan, built famous Taj Mahal very close to the fort of Mughals.

The Agra Fort Structure

The Fort of Agra was constructed at the bank of the River Yamuna and extends over 2.5 kilometers of land. The Agra Fort is made of red sandstone, so it is also called Lal Quila (Red Fort) of Agra. There are several buildings inside the fort. The main wall has 2 gates- the Delhi Gate and the Amar Singh Gate. Entry for tourists is open only from the Amar Singh Gate. The Architecture of Agra Fort is amazing.

The Lal Quila (Red Fort Of Agra) is also described as a walled splendid city. The Agra Fort consists of two halls- Diwan-e-Aam ( Hall of Public Audience) and Diwan-e-Khas. The Diwan-e-Aam was built by Shah Janan in 1628. Besides these you find the Royal Pavilions. The fort also contains two beautiful mosques- Nagina Masjid & Mina Masjid, palaces Macchi Bhavan, Khas Mahal, Shah Jahani Mahal, Shish Mahal and the Zenana Mina Bazaar (Market place for women). Inside the fort of Agra, there are several buildings made of pure marble with stunning carvings.

Shah Jahan's Imprisonment

The great Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb imprisoned his father and emperor Shah Jahan in the Agra Fort where he had a sight on the Tajmahal raised for his deceased wife. Shah Jahan was died in the Musamman Burj (a beautiful tower made of marble).
