Uttaranchal

History
The land UTTARANCHAL was known as KHASDESH ruled by Khasis in 2 BC. After Khasis, the region was governed by KUNIDAS- a Himalayan Tribe (200 AD). In Garhwal region, there was also an Ashokan edict.
Between 10- 18 AD, CHAND dynasty ruled in the region. With the decline of CHAND dynasty, Uttaranchal came under Garhwali kings and then Rohillas in 1744 AD. In 1803, the land was captured by Gurkhas but within ten years they were expelled by Britishers.
After India won freedom in 1947, it emerged as a part of UTTAR PRADESH. But in 2000, acquired its statehood.
Physiography:
Uttaranchal lies between 28°42' to 31°28' Latitude and 77°35' to 81°5' Longitude. The state is spread over 53483 km. Sq. surface area. Its length and width is 360 km (East to West) and 320 km (North to South). Its boundary touches Tibet, Nepal, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The state is divided into 13 districts.
Main rivers of the state are Yamuna, Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. The three rivers meet at Deoprayag and give birth to Holy Ganga. Temperature varies between 10°C-40°C in summer and 1°C-22°C in winter. Monsoon is from July to September.
Demography
According to 2001 cencus population of Uttaranchal is 8,479,562 with density of 160 person / km. Sq and ratio of 964 female per 1000 male. A number of language: Hindi, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Bhotia, Jaunsari, Tehriyali are spoken. Major religions are Hinduism and Sikhism. Muslim, Buddhists, Jains constitute only 3% of total population.
Natural Resources and Industries
A number of crops like Rice, Wheat, Maize, Oilseeds, Tobacco, Fruits and Dry-fruits are grown in Uttaranchal. Tourism, Cement, Glass, Ceramics, Handicrafts, Electronics, Rice-mills are major industries of the state. Minerals like Uranium, Limestone, Copper, Lead, Granite are also found here.
